Elizabeth Whyte Schulze

"My materials are gathered longleaf pine needles that are bound with raffia into sensuous coiled vessels. Row upon row of repetitive stitching sculpts the basket surface of uneven rows into rounded oval forms. Applying acrylic paint to the finely crafted surface allows me a freedom of design which I was unable to achieve with embroidery. Painting directly on the stitched surface my figures come to life furiously propelling arms and legs in an effort to move across the basket surface. Each work is an opportunity to paint lush colors with layers of wash, dots, marks and text that overlay and intertwine the figure in a series of complex designs. My work combines contemporary artistic expression on the outside while the inside reveals the finely coiled craftsmanship of natural materials." - Elizabeth Whyte Schulze
